Da Lat is called the city of a thousand flowers for good reason: almost every month has its signature bloom. Exact timing shifts by a few weeks each year depending on the weather, so treat the table below as a guide.
Flower calendar (approx.)
| Flower | Season | Best |
|---|---|---|
| Wild sunflower (dã quỳ) | Late October – December | November |
| Cherry blossom (mai anh đào) | Late December – February | Around January, before Tet |
| Purple jacaranda (phượng tím) | March – May | April |
| Hydrangea | Almost all year | Rainy season, bigger blooms |
Wild sunflowers — gold at the end of the year
Wild sunflowers bloom just after the rainy season ends, turning hillsides and mountain roads yellow. The best spots are outside the city: the passes into Da Lat, around Tuyen Lam Lake, Trai Mat and Cau Dat. Driving up to Da Lat at this time is a flower tour in itself — with a private car you can stop for photos along the way.
Cherry blossoms — pink for Tet
Cherry blossoms peak around January, just as the city prepares for Tet. You'll find them around Xuan Huong Lake, Cu hill and many central streets. It's also peak season: hotels and cars sell out early.
Purple jacarandas — a gentle spring
From March to May, jacarandas bloom along many central streets during the sunny dry season — perfect for walks and photos.
Da Lat Flower Festival
The Flower Festival is usually held in December, roughly every two years, with flower displays and parades. Check the city's official announcements for exact dates.
Tips
- Book hotels and transport early for year-end, Christmas, New Year and Tet.
- Go early in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds.
- Don't pick flowers or step into gardens for photos.
- A private car makes flower hunting easier: stop at any hillside on the way, no bus timetable. See prices for Saigon – Da Lat, Mui Ne – Da Lat and Nha Trang – Da Lat, or take the Da Lat city tour.
